As we well know, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on automotive listings since April 15.

My local ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) has seen a decrease in privately listed ads from over 850 to less than 300 in the last two weeks. Has anyone else been experiencing a Craigslist-pocalypse?

I don’t browse enough to say if things are down, but I still feel that this is most likely to get rid of listings from scammers, dealers posting as private sale, and flakes. $5 is low enough that it really shouldn’t be a burden for anyone seriously selling a car. I’m sure a few people will say FB marketplace is good enough, but I think you risk losing a lot more than $5 not being on CL.

Funny you mentioned this as I was just thinking my local craigslist seemed a bit scarce in private ads. But then again I found a factory manual sc300 for sale so it has been an unusual morning.

So that’s why my searches have been sparse.

There is this gem right on the first search page, though. $3500! NP!

from what i can see on my local CL, yes the number has decreased. not that there were many to begin with.

I agree. It seemed like before a lot of buy here/pay here dealers were posting most of their inventory daily, or in some cases several times a day. This should stop that behavior. $5 is nothing if you’re selling a vehicle. I’d gladly pay $5, over put ting it on Facebook or spending $75 for Autotrader. Depends on the vehicle, I’d put it on Autotrader only if it was above $5,000 or so. Most CL shoppers are looking for cheap transpo rtation.

I live in a big enough market (Chicago), that it’s still pegged at the 3,000 ads it can show at once.

Yeah, I agree with all of that - it will be interesting to see if the numbers start to creep up again. I’m in a relatively small market, with a very, very active FB marketplace, and lots of clueless and dirtbag CL sellers, so I feel like the impacts might be more noticeable. In any case, a nearly 66% drop in listings seems significant.

I like it. I'm encountering far fewer scams and spam. There may have been a slight decline in total ads, but I doubt 5 bucks is keeping serious people away all that much.

I’m not on FB, and have yet to find a way to search the marketplace with any sort of filter criteria. Every time I get to the page and try to filter it forces me to log in. Thoughts?

I haven’t noticed much change in Houston, but we have such a big market I’m not sure I would notice.

Definitely down in Seattle, and I am fine with it - cuts out a lot of garbage as well as the perpetual scams.

I’ve noticed cars for sale by owner decreasing, and also sc ammers now posting cars in auto wheels and tires by owner.

I hope it’s a reduction in spam/crap ads like the  Las Vegas dealer that almost exclusively posts ads for cars that have been sold. We don’t need those or any of the duplicate or misleading ones out there. Unfortunately, we don’t have a viable CL alternative in my area, so I don’t know where we would migrate to.

I can’t say I’ve noticed a huge drop. I do hope it will keep the re-posting and scammers down, although there aren’t a ton of those here (scammers, I mean).

I did find this, though:

P eople who have been able to post ads for free for years aren’taren't  going to start using a credit card to pay 5 bucks. It's not only cars. Craigslist has gone the way of greedy America and will soon go the way of newsprint. If they were making it by supplying free ads the public isnt going to subsidizecrheir greed so their CEO can buy more cars boats and homes.

It’s not about the temps, it’s about the use of salt in the winter.  We season our roads very well from December to March here in the metro Detroit area.  Could be that we have a yuge pile of salt down by the river to use.

Its pretty much ended my looking at craigslist. The cars that I keep an eye out for have totally di sappeared from the market. If you google E30 in Philly nothing even comes up, same with corvair. Those are basically the only searches I run lol
